There is no denying the sheer largeness of our Biblical faith. There is a lot to know: story and truth and history. But in the middle of this largeness stands the simple, the basic, the essential, the pure: “love God and love your neighbor”. James 1:27 puts it this way: “pure and genuine religion means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you”.
This year, we want to aim ourselves towards transformation and generosity, the two sides of a vital and living faith. We want to call ourselves into thoughtfulness about this, carrying on meaningful conversations, thinking about the various dimensions of a life that grows deeper while it also moves toward practical service.
We will discover that there is a lot of personal uniqueness in how transformation and generosity work their way into our lives, to be sure. We will experience this “purity” differently, but we will experience it together.
